The city that never sleeps also boasts a theatre scene that never sleeps. With the summer now behind us, this is an overview of all that’s coming to New York stages this fall (spoiler alert: it’s a lot).
Susan Stroman, John Kander, and David Thompson continue their thirty year collaboration with “The Beast in the Jungle”, a “dance play” inspired by Henry James’ 1903 novella. The dancing and music is beautiful to watch and hear, but the piece is dramatically unfulfilling, its more cryptic source material diminished in the course of fleshing out, crystallizing, and modernizing the story.
“The Rite of Spring” (1975) and “Café Müller” (1978), legendary choreographer Pina Bausch's two most iconic works, are the sold-out centerpiece of BAM’s Next Wave Festival; Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch carries on following sudden Bausch's death in 2009, delivering a performance as fresh, profound, and exhilarating as ever.
