FEATURE: Top 10 Shows of 2018

By my count, I’ve attended 246 performances of theatre, dance, music, opera, and cabaret during 2018.  Out of a field that large, it’s hard to pick just ten, but nevertheless, here are my top ten favorite shows I saw in New York (including no new musicals and only three Broadway shows!).

Meatloaf's "Bat Out of Hell - The Musical" will play City Center; "King Lear" will now play the Cort , opening up the Golden for "Hillary and Clinton"; cast announced for FOX's "Rent: Live" telecast; Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child joins "Once on This Island"; the Drama Book Shop will close its 40th Street location at end of January; Broadway League finds younger audience attended 2017–2018 season; trailer for "Latin History for Morons" on Netflix; playwright Ntozake Shange dead at 70

REVIEW: “Bernhardt/Hamlet”—bold and incoherent

Theresa Rebeck’s “Bernhardt/Hamlet” is a backstage comedy-drama of historical fiction recounting Sarah Bernhardt’s groundbreaking 1897 turn as Hamlet in Paris; discursive, incoherent, and verbose, the play has nothing particularly interesting to say about gender politics as it ambitiously attempts to tackle a panoply of themes and ideas.  I’d much rather see Ms. McTeer play Hamlet than watch an endless series of rehearsals.

"Network" will play the Belasco; Taylor Mac’s "Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus", starring Nathan Lane and Andrea Martin, will play the Booth; Glenda Jackson-helmed "King Lear" cast announced; "Titanic" and “Pal Joey” revivals in the works; “The Rivals” and “Marie” are Broadway-aimed; Tony Awards to remain on CBS; 2018 Theatre Hall of Fame inductees announced; profile of Jennifer Simard; 72 plays and musicals to see; "Theater Talk" ends after 25 seasons; RIP Marin Mazzie

"A Bronx Tale" will close August 5th; Glenda Jackson will do "King Lear" on Broadway in Spring 2019; an all female Broadway revival of "Glengarry Glen Ross" is in the works; the Vineyard Theatre announces its 2018-2019 season; Austin Pendleton is directing and starring in "Wars of the Roses: Henry VI & Richard III"; Manhattan Concert Productions will present "The Scarlet Pimpernel"; Liliane Montevecchi and Dame Gillian Lynne have died

REVIEW: Albee’s “Three Tall Women” Astonishes

Edward Albee’s 1994 Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece “Three Tall Women” is ferociously compelling under the smart hand of director Joe Mantello, and features a trio of astonishing performances by Glenda Jackson, Laurie Metcalf, and Alison Pill.  This limited engagement of a towering work by a towering playwright and featuring three towering performances is not to be missed.
