tl;dr for February 20th
- The beloved 1991 musical adaption of "The Secret Garden" is headed to Broadway next season for its first revival in a new production helmed by director/choreographer Warren Carlyle; cast, dates, and theatre TBA
- A starry cast has been announced for Aaron Sorkin's stage adaption of "To Kill A Mockingbird", set for Broadway this fall (theatre TBA), including Jeff Daniels, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Gideon Glick, Stephen McKinley-Henderson, and Stark Sands
- On the regional circuit, "The Sting", starring Harry Connick Jr., will play Papermill Playhouse in New Jersey, aimed for Broadway; this new musical adaption of the acclaimed 1973 crime caper film features a book by Bob Martin ("The Drowsy Chaperone") and score by Hollman and Kotis ("Urinetown"); a new revue, "Unmasked", celebrating the songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber, will also play Papermill this fall, while La Jolla Playhouse will welcome The Bengsons' "Hundred Days" (read my review of the New York production); and good news for fans of the cult musical "Chess" as a new D.C. production is generating buzz
- Casting update: Wayne Brady returns to "Kinky Boots" on March 5th, playing opposite The Scissor Sisters' Jake Shears then American Idol's David Cook; Drew Gehling has returned to "Waitress", replacing Jason Mraz, and Katharine McPhee will make her Broadway debut when songwriter Sara Bareillis departs the show on March 11th
- Playwrights Horizons has announced its 2018-2019 season
- MCC Theater abruptly cancelled its forthcoming production of Neil LaBute's "Reasons to Be Pretty Happy", and severed ties with the playwright, who was in residence with the company; no reason has been given publicly
- The Marquis Theatre and the Manhattan Theatre Club's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre will dim their lights at 7:45pm on Tuesday in memory of Jan Maxwell; my two cents: all Broadway theatres should dim their lights for this 5-time Tony nominee who passed away last week
